Andrew Gwynne MP's Weekly Update
View this newsletter online
Hello and welcome to my weekly update!

The PM's turn-around mission after last week's disastrous local election results was supposed to kick start this week, but it seems the car has stalled once again

Not only is Rishi failing to stop the small boats, he's failing to stop Tory MPs from abandoning him!

The country can't take any more of the utter chaos this government is inflicting upon us.

We need a general election now.

HIGHLIGHTS
A real pleasure to visit York House in Heald Green this morning, a superb assisted living service ran by Community Integrated Care, who are members of the National Care Forum.

It was great to speak to residents and staff about some of the outstanding programmes they are involved in, giving the “Social” in Social Care the recognition it needs.

Labour’s vision for a National Care Service will give places like York House the backing they need to unleash the potential of social care, after 14 years of being side-lined by successive Tory governments.

I even got to take away a fantastic memento, from the team’s work with the Rugby League World Cup!
Victims of the contaminated blood scandal have been left on the hook by this government for far too long.

Enough warm words, time for action.
The Rafah offensive is already creating a major humanitarian crisis, and cannot be allowed to continue.

It is incumbent on the British Government to be clear with all parties to conflict, that any breach of international humanitarian law is intolerable.
It was my pleasure to catch up with the Worshipful the Civic Mayor of Tameside, Taf Sharif, over a cup of tea on the Terrace.

She was down in London to attend the Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace today… As Tameside’s first ever Muslim mayor, she’s broken new ground.

Taf has been incredibly busy throughout the municipal year - in every town in the borough - supporting community groups and good causes, thanking volunteers, and celebrating the best of Tameside: its people.

She’s also been raising lots of money for her Mayoral Charities. Her term of office is almost up, but I hope she had a great day at the Palace!
It was a pleasure to address the National Care Association conference today (even if at the wrong Manchester football stadium!)

Consensus is clear across the sector that we need fundamental reform.

Through the creation of a National Care Service, that’s exactly what the next Labour government will deliver.
Andrew in the the media

Over the weekend, the worst fears of many of us who have been watching the scenes coming out of Gaza in recent months have come to pass.

Israel has begun a major offensive in the Palestinian settlement of Rafah, where hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians are sheltering from the violence that has already led many to flee their homes.

What has made this all the more harrowing, is that we know the prospect of an end to the violence is closer than it has ever been, with both sides getting round the table and looking to negotiate a lasting and viable ceasefire.

Eastern Rafah and the Rafah crossing is not just a place which continues to provide shelter to many people, but it is also a vital entry point of humanitarian aid into Gaza.

Therefore, any sustained military operation in the area, however limited in purported scope, will cause untold damage not just on those in the immediate vicinity, but on those who rely on the aid coming through the crossing.

I have called for the Rafah offensive not to go ahead ever since its prospect was first brought to public attention.

When we have a ceasefire in our grasp, such a reckless use of military force that would leave nothing but death and destruction in its wake is simply unfathomable.

Now is the time to relentlessly pursue a path to peace, which can only come through the delivery of a safe and secure two-state solution, with Palestinians and Israelis living side by side in harmony.

Since those awful events of October 7th, where the terrorists of Hamas murdered innocent Israelis, we have seen a consistent pattern emerge.

Innocent people have continued to lose their lives, or have their lives changed beyond recognition.

We now have a chance to turn the tide, and pursue a path to peace, but the continuation of the offensive in Rafah will only serve to further that pattern of innocent lives being lost.

We need an immediate ceasefire to end the offensive, release the hostages, allow aid into Gaza in the quantities required, and ensure efforts are focused on delivering that lasting peace people in the region so desperately need.

Anything less is a betrayal of those people who continue to suffer, and opens the door for even further, catastrophic tragedy.
