Food & Water Justice works tirelessly to protect your food and water and ensure bold climate progress. This week, we’re sharing a behind-the-scenes look into how we protect your health and environment through the legal system and why we’re passionate about this work.
Hi! My name is Tarah Heinzen. I’m the Legal Director at Food & Water Watch, overseeing our attorney team and all of our legal work.
Our legal team is currently advancing more than 20 high-impact lawsuits to protect your food and water, and our shared climate. In addition to litigation, we’re also doing creative advocacy for strong agency regulations and providing legal support to dozens of Food & Water Watch grassroots campaigns across the country.
I started my career as a grassroots organizer for a national environmental organization, working in Iowa to stop water pollution from factory farms and hold the industry accountable. In that role, I had the opportunity to work with attorneys and other groups who inspired me to go to law school to get some additional advocacy tools in my toolbox.
I eventually had the opportunity to work directly with Food & Water Watch, representing the organization in litigation. It immediately became clear that it was where I wanted to work full-time.
Food & Water Watch employs a holistic approach to its advocacy, utilizing not only the courts but also research, communications, and policy advocacy, integrating these strategies to build power and achieve long-term social change.
What I love about Food & Water Watch is that we do not compromise. In my role, that means our legal team gets to be bold — we bring high-impact lawsuits and provide legal support to organizing campaigns. We also play an important role in the broader environmental and progressive movement by emboldening our partners to take stronger positions on critical issues.
Food & Water Watch’s overall approach is so important to me. We’re working to build real political power from the ground up with a mass movement of people working together to enact policy change.
I believe in our determination to fight for and win the change we need, not just what seems politically possible or expedient right now.
Thanks for powering the fights that are driving real change in people’s lives. And, thank you for taking the time to learn more about the members of our legal team this week! You can always keep up with what we’re currently working on in the Featured Legal webpage!
Food & Water Watch and its affiliated organization, Food & Water Action, are advocacy groups with a common mission to protect our food, water and climate.
