The proposed rule the Biden administration announced yesterday would allow for faster deportation of asylum seekers who are believed to pose security threats, reports Camilo Montoya-Galvez of CBS News .??
DHS said that the measure would affect a relatively small group of migrants. The proposed rule would expedite "checks for mandatory bars to asylum," Andrea Castillo of the Los Angeles Times reports. Castillo and Montoya-Galvez also look at what else the administration might be considering.??
We'll be keeping an eye on implementation once the rule is finalized, as our VP of Policy and Advocacy, Laurence Benenson, told Maanvi Singh of The Guardian . Among our initial takes: The proposal is relatively limited in scope but needs to be implemented with care, and we need Congress to lead on broader modernization of asylum, border and legal-immigration policies.????
Separately, DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas discussed the Biden administration's work on immigration with NPR 's Steve Inskeep. Mayorkas spoke about the decrease in migrant encounters at the border and the need for additional funding to fight immigration backlogs.??
"Our goal is to eliminate to the fullest extent possible the phenomenon of what is commonly termed 'irregular migration' - people placing their lives and their life savings in the hands of smugglers to arrive in between the ports of entry, which is dangerous and also feeds a criminal network," Mayorkas said. ??

**HEALING** - In his journey to heal from PTSD, Afghanistan veteran Christopher Hoyt of Oklahoma City found help and inspiration through his Afghan American therapist, reports Kolby Terrell of KOCO??News 5 . "Knowing that he's from Afghanistan, he's sitting there telling me, 'How can I help you get over the trauma that you had to experience over there?' That was pretty incredible," Hoyt said of his therapist, Omar Rashidzada. Don't miss the kicker on what Hoyt plans to do next. ??
This week in local welcome:??

**LEGAL BATTLE** - The Department of Justice and advocacy groups filed separate lawsuits yesterday over Iowa's new law that would enable the state to arrest and deport certain migrants, reports Hannah Fingerhut of the Associated Press . Katarina Sostaric of Iowa Public Radio re-ups law enforcement concerns: "Playing politics with public safety never helps public safety," said Marshalltown Police Chief and Law Enforcement Immigration Task Force co-chair Michael Tupper.??
**ANNUNCIATION HOUSE** - The Texas attorney general's office is again requesting that a judge shut down El Paso's Annunciation House amid legal proceedings, saying the shelter has not been compliant with record requests, report Julian Resendiz of Border Report and Andra Litton of KTSM . "There is no legal basis to support any of today's temporary injunction filed by the Texas AG's office," said Jerry Wesevich, the nonprofit's lawyer.??
**'INHERENT DIGNITY'** - In an Austin American-Statesman op-ed,??evangelical pastor Tim Moore weighs in on a Houston megachurch pastor who called migrants "garbage." Moore recognizes the challenges at the U.S.-Mexico border but writes about "the biblical teaching that all human beings are made in God's image with inherent dignity. No person is 'garbage' but is 'fearfully and wonderfully made' by God. ... I hope immigrants here in Texas will know that most evangelical churches love and are eager to welcome them."??
