A big thank you to everyone who supported this year’s Big Reading Challenge
I’m delighted that this year, we’ve smashed our target and raised £2,280 for the Nottingham Imagination Library. Councillor Cheryl Barnard, Portfolio Holder for Children, Young People and Education, joined me to launch the challenge at Nottingham Castle (pictured) and then read stories to children in schools and libraries across the city to raise money for the charity that gives free books from birth up to the age of five. Since its launch in Nottingham in 2009, the charity has given more than half-a-million books to 11,000 children. Donations are essential to keep the charity going: £2 will pay for a book for a child, while £130 will pay for all 60 books from birth to age five for a child on the scheme. If you would like to help, donations are still being accepted at www.gofund.me.com/f/big-reading-challenge-2024.

The programme has successfully replaced over 36,000 lights with new LED sources, in partnership with Enerveo.
Nottingham City Council secured a grant for £7m from the Government’s Levelling Up Fund to upgrade street lights in all the city’s wards with new, energy-efficient LEDs. As part of this ambitious project, subway lighting and signage lights were also upgraded. The programme began in July 2022, starting with Sherwood and Clifton and most recently finished in St Ann’s, the Meadows and the Dales.
