In my conversations across OR-06, I hear from so many folks, including my fellow Latinas, about their fear, and their outrage, at the prospect of politicians dictating what we do with our own bodies (and now, going so far as to monitor women’s pregnancies, as Donald Trump is calling for).
So when The New York Times asked me how we win in districts like mine that have large Latino communities, here’s what I told them:
In Oregon, Representative Andrea Salinas, who in 2022 became one of the first two Hispanic candidates elected to Congress from the state, said she cast the issue of abortion rights as a matter of “empowering women to make their own personal choices with their doctor.”
“I didn’t have as much as my competitors to put out glossy mailers or fancy television ads, but what I did have I used to lean into reproductive rights,” said Ms. Salinas, adding that the issue helped fuel her victory in a northeastern district home to the most Latinos in the state.
Listen , if we do our jobs right, and show voters that this race is essential for empowering women to make our own health care decisions, we can win and retake control of the House of Representatives.
But getting that message out on TV, online, and in person will take months of hard work and a lot of resources. And I’m counting on grassroots supporters like you to help us succeed. Will you pitch in today and help me make my case to the voters here in OR-06? [[link removed]]
