Wednesday 26 February Neighbours Help! Dear Friend, Our Appeal #neighbourshelp has now been running for a week. [link removed] We are still facing a serious financial crisis. This could mean complete closure in the next few months. If we close, our services will disappear. We have been inspired by the comments that you have left on our campaign page and encouraged by the generosity of so many of our past and newly discovered supporters. But we still need help. Throughout this crisis, we are continuing to provide legal advice to asylum seekers and are progressing with their legal claims. This is being achieved online, on the phone and even face to face in very special circumstances, albeit at a distance. Consonant is still helping. We are working hard to reconfigure our services for these times of isolation and to give careers advice, advice on benefits, English language classes and counselling online. Our staff are providing the services and advice that our users now need more than ever. Ecaterina, a member of Consonant's Team says: ‘On Monday this week, I helped a woman who had to flee domestic violence with her young child in the midst of the COVID19 lockdown. She has been in the UK for only 3 years. She has no family or friends except for the perpetrator. She does not speak English and has no experience of claiming benefits, dealing with housing, bills, etc. in the UK. A truly desperate situation. I helped her with all her benefits and with her housing and helped her get food for the time-being. One of our volunteer interpreters (also from a migrant background) helped too. I am very proud of the work we are doing.’ Remember, workers in the Health Sector, supermarkets and those working in food distribution are keeping us all going. Many are from migrant backgrounds and need us to support them so that they can support you.
