Happy Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month! Each week of May, we will be highlighting young AAPI leaders who are accelerating progressive change and fighting for what’s right, both in their communities and across the nation.

 

This week, we’re celebrating Rep. Andy Kim from New Jersey, who has stepped up to run for Senate this year!

Andy Kim won his election in 2018, defeating a Republican incumbent to flip his district blue. Upon his victory, Rep. Kim became the first Asian American from New Jersey elected to federal office.

 

An original cosponsor of the Equality Act, Rep. Kim immediately solidified himself as a champion of equal rights in Congress. As young LGBTQ+ people deal with discrimination, housing insecurity, and inadequate healthcare, Rep. Kim is fighting to ensure a better future for our LGBTQ+ youth. 

 

Rep. Kim has also fought to protect communities from senseless gun violence by  helping to pass the Safer Communities Act. Right now, students are growing up in fear of  tragic mass shootings, which is why Rep. Kim cosponsored a total assault weapons ban. While extremist Republicans are blocking this ban, Kim has not given up on creating safer communities.

Prior to his time in Congress, Kim was a Truman Scholar and a Rhodes Scholar in International Relations, which later led him to serve in the Obama Administration on national security.  As the son of Korean immigrants, Andy Kim’s work helps to ensure there is an equitable place for young AAPI leaders in America.
