Hey John – It’s Teacher Appreciation Week, but I imagine our teachers aren’t feeling very appreciated.
According to data released in February by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), the national teacher shortage has increased so much since the pandemic that almost 80% of public schools report having a hard time finding qualified candidates.
This shortage is due in large part to Republicans gutting school resources and teachers’ pay. There are also the threats to teachers and school boards by parents who have been radicalized by Libs of TikTok and propaganda about “critical race theory” and “trans ideology.”
I’m sure you get the picture. Things are bad – but if Republicans have their way, the situation could become drastically worse.
Last year, House Republicans tried to eliminate ALL Dept. of Education funding for K-12 schools, which would have left 220,000 teachers unemployed.
They didn’t get away with it this time, but states like Idaho aren’t helping improve the situation.
Our governor signed House Bill 710 last month, making it state law that parents can SUE public schools and libraries for having books or other media depicting gay characters and storylines – unless they’re in a new adults-only section.
What’s happening in Idaho is just one example of how Republicans are weaponizing state governments against public education and worsening the teacher shortage – and students will feel the impact, too.
This new law is not just a threat to public schools and libraries; it is also an attack on gay Americans like me and every kid who already feels outcast, scared, or alone because of their sexual orientation.
We need representation in Congress who will take these threats seriously and secure protections for our teachers, our students, AND the LGBTQ+ community. Can I count on your support?
