The New Normal

What to Know: A new poll shows that 95 percent of Americans have made lifestyle changes because of the coronavirus.

The TPPF Take: It’s important that we seek a balance in our lives, even as we take steps to limit the spread of the virus.

“We’re a free people, able to make choices—even ill-informed ones—about our own lives and wellbeing. It’s called liberty,” says TPPF’s Chuck DeVore. “Our sophisticated health care system, equipped by an arsenal of innovation made possible by free markets and prosperity, may allow us to enjoy both liberty and health.”

Suddenly Schooling

What to Know: It’s still unclear how long Texas public schools will remain closed—leaving millions of Texas schoolkids in educational limbo.

The TPPF Take: TPPF and other groups sent a letter to Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath with recommendations for securing access to education for Texas kids.

“Many Texas students are missing educational time that is key to their development as students, whether they are in their final year of high school preparing for college, or in the critical years of early literacy,” says TPPF’s Emily Sass.“The impact of this lost time for so many students may be felt for years to come if actions are not taken to ensure our children have the fullest possible access to educational material.”

Keeping Families Together

What to Know: For families separated by foster care, the COVID-19 pandemic can make a tough situation even harder.

The TPPF Take: TPPF leads a coalition calling for CPS to work harder than ever to reunite families and minimize a child’s time in foster care.

“Children in foster care are especially vulnerable to the uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 outbreak and the actions taken by government,” says TPPF’s Andrew Brown. “Across the nation, visits with families are being canceled and children who were close to going home may have to remain in foster care for months longer than necessary.”
