Dear John,

This month, we are pleased to be able to share the 2023 Donor Impact Report([link removed]) with you – showing just how much we can achieve when we work together – as well as a selection of uplifting refugee stories from around the world.

In 2023 the number of forcibly displaced people reached a staggering 114 million people and UNHCR issued the declaration of 43 emergencies: the highest in a decade. Despite this, generous people like you continued to show their commitment to supporting refugees and displaced people with donations. These donations have provided truly lifesaving support around the globe, from emergency shelters in Syria to cash assistance in Sudan. Read the report now to see the impact of supporting UNHCR.

In 2009, Raphael Basemi arrived in Kenya’s Kakuma camp with just a bag of clothes and his education certificates. Now, the Congolese refugee runs the largest community-led recycling enterprise in the camp, providing hundreds of jobs for other refugees and local community members. UNHCR helped Raphael to set up a shop where he sells a range of items made from recycled plastics, including plates, cups, rulers and buttons. In the last three years, Raphael has created more than 500 jobs. He has also expanded his operations into solid waste management, dealing with all types of waste, including bones, glass, metal, and organic waste.
