Dear John,
The American Immigration Council filed a federal lawsuit today [[link removed]] to block SF 2340, one of the worst, most far-reaching immigration laws ever passed in the state of Iowa. Together with our partners at the ACLU of Iowa and the ACLU Immigrant Rights’ Project, we are standing up against hateful legislation that will harm immigrants, tear families apart, and devastate communities.
The new law allows Iowa police to arrest, prosecute, and then either deport or imprison people who have reentered the U.S. after they were previously deported—even if that person had federal authorization to reenter or is now authorized to be in the U.S.
This includes individuals with green cards; people who have been granted asylum; and those who were issued visas after being a victim of a crime, abuse, or terrorism, among others.

The Iowa law will go into effect July 1, unless the courts block it. SF 2340 was modeled on S.B 4 in Texas, which is currently blocked by the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals.
If it goes into effect, the new law will conflict with existing federal law and have dramatic consequences for all Iowans.
As an Iowan, I’m proud of the work we’re doing to stand up to this bigoted law that has no place in our state.
We will keep you updated as the case continues. In the meantime, please consider making a gift in support of this litigation. [[link removed]]
Sincerely,
Kate Melloy Goettel
Legal Director
