Friends,
I am writing this as the first gun bill of session, one of many potentially unconstitutional pieces of legislation, gets a hearing on the Senate floor. While it may look innocuous enough, this bill has an agenda. This is a bill that will target “straw purchases” and “binary trigger” mechanisms. The binary trigger mechanism language is redundant as it attempts to make illegal something which is already illegal in Minnesota, increasing the rate of fire from one pull of the trigger. This portion of the bill has many scary aspects to it on the matters of constitutionality, and the government seizing/criminalizing private property that is currently legal.
What this bill misses, is that everything it seeks to rectify is already illegal, only now it is broadening the legal scope which will put law abiding citizens at risk. What we need is stronger enforcement of current law, along with punishments to fit the crime of those who knowingly and maliciously break the law and commit violent crimes.
As to often is the case, the democrats are passing an unconstitutional bill while ignoring current law, and enforcing what is already is on the books.
