NEW: Annual Report on Antisemitism Worldwide for 2023

[link removed]

In countries ranging from Brazil to South Africa, and from Belgium to the United States… 2023 saw an increase of dozens of percentage points in the number of antisemitic incidents in comparison to 2022.

“October 7 helped spread a fire that was already out of control,” states the Annual Report on Antisemitism Worldwide, which is published by Tel Aviv University and ADL.

A particularly steep increase was recorded following the October 7 attacks, but the first nine months of 2023, before the war started, also witnessed an increase in the number of incidents in most countries with large Jewish minorities, including the United States, France, the UK, Australia, Italy, Brazil and Mexico.

What’s News

Biden on Antisemitism: In a powerful speech at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum’s Days of Remembrance ceremony this week, President Biden made clear that antisemitism will not be tolerated:

“There is no place on any campus in America — any place in America — for antisemitism or hate speech or threats of violence of any kind. Whether against Jews or anyone else. Violent attacks, destroying property is not peaceful protest. It’s against the law…. To the Jewish community, I want you to know: I see your fear, your hurt, your pain. Let me reassure you, as your president, you’re not alone, you belong, you always have and you always will.”

On the same day, the White House announced “Year Two of the Strategy” and built on its National Strategy to Counter Antisemitism through Dept of Education guidance that provides U.S. school districts and colleges with examples of antisemitic discrimination. This new initiative will help more people recognize Title VI violations and hold violators accountable.

ADL played a key role in shaping the National Strategy, providing more than 30 policy recommendations to the White House, and we continue to spearhead efforts to pass the Countering Antisemitism Act, which would make permanent key aspects of the National Strategy.

U.S. Dept. of Ed. To Investigate Berkeley Public Schools: Responding to a Title VI complaint filed by ADL and the Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law, the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights has opened a formal investigation into whether the Berkeley (CA) Unified School District failed to address non-stop “severe and persistent” bullying and harassment of Jewish students since October 7, 2023 and has permitted retaliation against parents who complained.

Iran Attack Sparks Online Antisemitic Threats: A new analysis by the ADL Center on Extremism has found that expressions of antisemitism on Telegram increased dramatically following the Iranian regime’s unprecedented assault on Israel on April 13, 2024, which included drones and missiles. The findings suggest that antisemitic individuals feel emboldened and inspired by the Iranian attack.

Wave of Israel-Related Antisemitism in Northern NJ: Read about the disturbing incidents in a wave of antisemitic and extreme anti-Zionist activity in northern New Jersey that ADL has tracked. Northern New Jersey has a significant Jewish population, and recent activities have served to foment tension and fear.

Op-Ed: The weaponization of the Holocaust against Israel: “The purpose of Yom Hashoah and all the activities surrounding it is to remember the millions who perished, and to commit to never again. But what we are seeing too often in the past six months is not a commitment towards avoiding a future Holocaust, but the turning of the Holocaust into a weapon against the Jewish people.”

Focusing Law Enforcement on Antisemitism: ADL organized a national webinar last week for federal, state, local and campus law enforcement on the topic of Rising Antisemitism in the U.S. The ADL Center on Extremism provided a briefing on key findings from our 2023 Audit of Antisemitic Incidents, and insight into what we’ve been tracking on campuses. The webinar was attended by more than 200 members of law enforcement.

Tell university leaders to keep our campus open and safe from hate. As the school year comes to an end, our campuses are facing serious disruptions and a troubling increase in antisemitism, impacting classes, finals and special events. These constant disturbances to learning and activities, including graduation ceremonies, are unfair and must stop. Students deserve a graduation that honors their hard work and achievements. Select a school and urge their leaders to protect students’ rights to a safe and meaningful end of the semester.

@JGreenblattADL

SJP is a group that applauds violence. Their agenda isn't about peace. It’s about confrontation and conflict, excusing violence and rationalizing hate. I’ve spoken with students & faculty at schools grappling with protests — they’re desperate, exhausted & angry because they don’t feel protected. So, hearing @POTUS give his ironclad, full-throated support last night was important.

My grandfather Bernard z”l escaped the Shoah, but much of our family didn’t. They were targeted because of who they were. It pains me to imagine what they'd think of the world now, with antisemitism surging across the globe. On #YomHaShoah, we vow to remember where hate can lead.

@ADL

A new poll by @Generation_Lab shows that only a small percentage of college students have actually participated in campus protests related to the Israel-Hamas war — and the majority of those polled oppose the tactics being used by anti-Israel protestors.

We are deeply disturbed that 24 #NY synagogues received bomb threats over Shabbat. These terrifying threats targeting & disrupting the Jewish community waste law enforcement resources & stoke & heighten fear when antisemitism is at all-time highs. We thank LE for determining the threats not credible & continuing to investigate.

We are disturbed to hear that a student at @UBuffalo made violent threats on social media directed at students participating in an on-campus march organized by the Jewish Student Association. We thank law enforcement for quickly investigating and arresting the perpetrator, and we thank the University for immediately responding to this horrific incident. #NotOnMyCampus.

An anti-Israel mob’s violent attack targeting Israeli tourists in an #Athens hotel is an appalling hate crime. We commend the Athens police for its swift response and urge Greek authorities to prosecute the perpetrators to the full extent of the law.
