Last week, I had the pleasure of joining a bipartisan group of mayors from over 40 of America’s largest cities—including Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass—to urge Congress to do more to tackle the issue of veterans’ homelessness. | Here is the reality of the situation: - For veteran homelessness, nearly 200,000 veterans access Veterans Affairs’ (VA) homeless programs every year and they are spread out all over the country – in urban and rural areas.
- House Republicans haven't prioritized investing in programs which lowered the rate of veteran homelessness by double digits during the pandemic.
- Some veterans cannot access affordable housing because their VA benefits put them over eligibility limits.
| I am working with my colleagues to update how federal, state, local, and private funders calculate income to make sure that veterans with service-connected disabilities are not being deemed ineligible for permanent supportive housing. If you or a loved one is a veteran experiencing homelessness, visit the VA’s webpage for resources and information. Or call the National Call Center for Homeless Veterans at (877) 4AID-VET (877-424-3838) for assistance.
