John,
Today Ground Game Texas intervened in a Ken Paxton lawsuit to protect local democracy and the work of our organization. Our goal is to defend the results of the May 2022 local election, when over 85% of Austin voters adopted a marijuana reform policy.
This case is important for multiple reasons.
It’s about democracy: Tens of thousands of Austin voters signed ballot petitions and went to the polls to adopt a policy that prevents racial bias in marijuana enforcement and saves scarce public resources. We need to defend our vote.
It’s about racial justice. Marijuana enforcement disproportionately targets Black and Latino communities. A single arrest can derail a person’s life, with negative impacts on employment, housing, education, family, and so much more.
It’s about changing Texas politics. Ground Game Texas has proven that our marijuana reform ballot campaigns increase voter turnout, especially among young voters and Black voters.
Help Ground Game Texas fight Ken Paxton with a contribution of $25 or more today. We’re protecting local democracy, advancing racial justice, and setting the stage for statewide political change.
Ground Game’s campaign in Austin was our first great success. We showed that a progressive ballot measure campaign could motivate young people in a city election; we also showed we could win an impactful policy reform. Ground Game has since launched over a dozen campaigns based on the Austin template — and we continue to grow!
Please help us continue the work of engaging progressive voters across Texas. With your support, we’ll keep fighting for change, in the community and in the courts.
With determination,
Ground Game Texas
