The Environmental Protection Agency released a final rule to limit pollution from coal and new natural gas-fired power plants, which will help slow the rise in global temperatures and reduce harmful air pollution. More than 28,000 Audubon supporters sent comments in support of the rule, which is projected to reduce carbon pollution by 1.38 billion metric tons through 2047—the equivalent to the annual emissions from 328 million gasoline-powered cars. First, the Department of the Interior officially halted plans to construct the misguided Ambler Road, a private industrial corridor that could have destroyed vital habitat in the Brooks Range. On the same day, the Interior Department finalized a new rule to strengthen protections for 13 million acres of “Special Areas” in the Western Arctic, including the globally significant Teshekpuk Lake wetlands.
