This Teacher Appreciation Week, teachers want a contract

This week is Teacher Appreciation Week, but the leadership at DC Public Schools is showing anything but appreciation for teachers.

"Instead of rewarding hard-working teachers with a contract, DCPS cancelled the negotiation session scheduled [for May 7] and filed a Public Employee Relations Board complaint against us," the Washington Teachers' Union said in a social media post.

"It's like Groundhog Day," said Washington Teachers' Union president Jacqueline Pogue Lyons. "Once again we are working on an expired contract and we're furious. We diligently go to our schools every day and teach our students professional, get the city thinks it doesn't have a legal obligation to negotiate a contract, especially in a timely manner."

WTU members will hold actions with members from eight schools this week. Teachers rallied yesterday at Coolidge High School (above) and will rally today at Eastern High School (1700 East Capitol St. NE) and tomorrow at Roosevelt High School (4301 13th St NW), both at 3:30 PM.

Wydown Workers get an election date

"After three long weeks, we have an election date!" Wydown Workers United said in a social media post this week. "We will be voting by mail-in ballot, and the votes will be counted June 10." Workers filed to form a union in April with Workers United Mid-Atlantic Regional Joint Board, explaining that "management has demonstrated a consistent pattern of disregard for the concerns we have brought to their attention."
