Mayor Bowser's budget threatens two decades of
climate
progress
- Just
four months after she announced her plan for “Carbon Free DC” at
the international climate conference in November, the mayor’s
budget eviscerates programs that are essential to fighting the
climate crisis and creating a just transition to clean and
sustainable energy. She eliminates funding for the Healthy Homes
Act, which would electrify the homes of 30,000 low- and
moderate-income
residents.
- She
cuts funding for the Solar for All program which assists low income
residents in obtaining rooftop
solar.
- She
creates a budget game which eliminates the city's responsibility to
purchase Solar Renewable Energy Credits for their electricity. As
the city's electric bill is 6% of the overall city load, this will
have an impact on the value of SRECs and the growth of the solar
industry. An estimated 300 solar jobs could be lost in the
city.
We understand that the city revenue has gone
down. Therefore, we ask all CCL members to email your ward city
council member and at-large members, asking them
to:
- Increase the tax on pollution from natural gas to
fully fund climate
programs.
- Fully fund Solar for All and the Healthy Homes
Act.
- Eliminate the budget shenanigans that threaten
the value of SRECs and the solar industry in
DC.
