Dear Reader,
Do you remember that one teacher who made a lasting impression on you?
For me it was Mr. McGuire, my high school math teacher and a subscriber to The Hechinger Report (Hi, Mr. McGuire!). His dedication to students went far beyond the classroom and left a lasting imprint on many of us.
I remember when a classmate asked him: “Why do you teach math?”
His response: “I always thought I was bad at math and I figured it would be helpful to teach math to people who felt this way and change their minds.”
Outside of teaching math, Mr. McGuire leads pep rallies, remembers every student’s name, comes to school early and stays late to help students, and remains in touch with students long past graduation.
Many of you are educators like Mr. McGuire. All of us know an educator in the mold of Mr. McGuire. Every day, educators like him are shaping the futures of the next generation, leaving an indelible mark on students.
During this Teacher Appreciation Week, I encourage you to take a moment to thank a teacher who has made a difference in your life or the lives of others. And I hope, if you can, that you support The Hechinger Report, your trusted source of education news.
