THE COALITION TO PREVENT LEAD POISONING HAS CREATED NEW PROGRAM DIRECTOR ROLE TO INCREASE ITS CAPACITY AND IMPACT ON OUR COMMUNITY 

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – After several years as an all-volunteer run organization, the Coalition to Prevent Lead Poisoning (CPLP) is happy to announce that with new funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, they have been able to hire a full time Program Director: Clare Henrie.  

“The Coalition to Prevent Lead Poisoning Executive Committee are thrilled that this new grant from the CDC allowed us to hire someone as committed to preventing childhood lead poisoning as Clare Henrie. Clare is a native Rochesterian and brings vast experience in policy change and advocacy,” said Mel Callan, CPLP Co-chair. “We look forward to continuing CPLP’s critical work of education and outreach to reduce lead poisoning in our community – and Clare is just the kind of compassionate and thoughtful individual to carry that evidence-based message. Welcome, Clare!”

“I am both honored and excited to have been given this chance to strengthen and elevate the Coalition to Prevent Lead Poisoning,” said Clare Henrie. “Tremendous strides have been made to dramatically reduce childhood lead poisoning in our community during the past 24 years, but there is still work to be done. I am looking forward to collaborating with the Coalition’s membership and working towards a shared vision of a community where childhood lead poisoning is truly history.” 

In a continuation of its long-standing, collaborative relationship with CPLP, Causewave Community Partners is both housing and providing operations support for the new Program Director. Last year Causewave, on behalf of the Coalition, was one of only 11 organizations in the country to receive funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s new opportunity: Supporting Communities to Reduce Lead Poisoning. Clare’s work for the CPLP will be fully funded by this three year award.

The Coalition to Prevent Lead Poisoning (CPLP) is an education and advocacy organization dedicated to preventing childhood lead poisoning. CPLP seeks to improve the quality of life by reducing the number of children who are exposed to lead in Monroe County and by supporting preventative efforts in other communities.

Current law requires that sellers or lessors of pre-1978 housing stock tell buyers or renters if they know that there is lead-based paint in the residence, but it does not require or incentivize testing for lead-based paint. We have until June 6 to convince Albany to pass the New York State Lead Paint Right to Know Act, which will ensure that testing happens and close the loophole that allows property owners to avoid knowing. The test results will also be sent to the New York State Department of Health, where they will slowly compile a list of homes that have lead present. 

You can help advance the bill by letting Speaker of the New York State Assembly Carl Heastie and Senate President Pro Tempore Andrea Stewart-Cousins know how important it is that the Lead Paint Right to Know Act (S.2353/A.4820) is brought to the floor for a vote in 2024. The 2024 legislative session ends on June 6.
