Congress Eyes Another Economic Stimulus
April 9, 2020
It is about four weeks into the national Coronavirus shut down, and Washington is yet again gearing up to add another indelible amount to the nation’s $23 trillion in debt ([link removed]) . Republican and Democrat Senators are conspiring to pass another stimulus to fund the Paycheck Protection Act ([link removed]) , a program that already received a staggering amount in the supplemental passed a couple of weeks ago called the CARES Act ([link removed]) . The Paycheck Protection Act allows small businesses to apply for forgivable government loans to partially cover payroll and some other fixed expenses for about two months.
But, since the passage of CARES politicians and those familiar with the program claimed it wasn’t given enough money ([link removed]) . According to an article in Politico ([link removed]) , “Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said he's spoken to all four House and Senate party leaders about sending $250 billion to the program. And McConnell said he intends to pass new relief as soon as Thursday without a roll call vote.” Without a roll call vote, no member has to take an official position, rather the bill is passed unanimously.
In response to this method of voting, Representative Thomas Massie (R-KY) doubled down on his efforts to call it out ([link removed]) as an unfaithful means of passage. But, Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) said in a tweet ([link removed]) that “we have days, not WEEKS to address this.” Our legislators don’t seem to think it’s important to read a text of a bill when we are already trillions of dollars into debt.
While members are still drawing up the next Coronavirus supplemental, the last time they negotiated Republicans caved to massive spending, reformed election laws, and propped up liberal institutions that silence Conservative thought.
With this in mind, it is doubtful Democratic lawmakers will be denied the opportunity to pass another relief bill without their priorities in place. According to Politico ([link removed]) , “Pelosi made clear Tuesday that she considers Mnuchin's request an "interim package" and still plans to pursue another massive legislative package that would expand unemployment benefits, including another round of direct cash payments and increase funding for state and local governments.” Meanwhile, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) called ([link removed]) for a “Heroes Fund” for “…essential workers that would include up to $25,000 increase in salary as well as health care worker recruitment incentive of $15,000. The "heroes fund" would also include benefits for the families of health care workers who have died in the pandemic.”
It is unfortunate that Washington keeps passing economic stimulus packages in such a rushed timeframe. These bills deal with unfathomable numbers and as such, require review and debate as they impact the nation’s wellbeing. Please join us in asking your Senator to be prudent with your taxpayer money and to not cave to liberal priorities.
