Dear Friends,

I was born on the Day of Europe, the 9th of May, 1987.

I was born into a European Union that had been built from the ruins of war on a promise for peace, for freedom, for democracy and for prosperity.

This day holds a deep personal significance for me – it symbolises my commitment to our continent and the values we as Greens and Europeans stand for.

This year, Europe Day is an even more special one for me, and for us as Greens. We’re not only one month away from the European election that is so important for our future. It’s also a Europe Day where we must realise: The European Union as a project of peace and democracy as well as the freedoms we've fought so hard for are at risk.

These freedoms are not trivial, they’re not a given, and they are definitely no luxury. We’re talking about the right to abortion that is under attack in many countries. About the freedom of the press which is an essential element of democracy and that the far-right is trying to undermine. And the freedoms of the LGBTI communities. We must defend the progress we fought for – or else the far-right is catapulting us back in time.

The video we made for this day, is a strong reminder that it’s worth fighting for these freedoms.

This Europe Day, I ask you to join me in a special way: by sharing this powerful conversation with a Holocaust survivor.
