Looking back on the progress we have made over the years in this country, the
2010 midterm elections, despite being over a decade ago, stands out as an
example of the importance of our active participation in our democracy and the
far-reaching implications of our elections.

The midterms were during President Obama's first term, and decreased voter
turnout led to Democrats losing 63 House seats and 6 Senate seats .

This allowed a Republican majority to obstruct progressive judicial nominations
which paved the way for the Supreme Court’s aggressive shift to the right. Now,
the Court’s far-right supermajority has made disastrous decisions, unraveling
some of the most critical human rights progress we’ve made in the last several
decades.

The consequences of this election could be dire, affecting not only abortion
rights but also immigrant protections against arbitrary detention, workplace
exploitation, and family separation.

NILC-IJF exists to combat these threats to immigrant communities, including
legislation that impacts deportation protections and policies that seek to
abolish the right to asylum.
