Black Louisiana voters turn to the U.S. Supreme Court in hopes of gaining a victory for their congressional map.

  • Black voters in Louisiana asked the Supreme Court to use the state's congressional map with two majority-Black districts for the 2024 election. A lower court struck down the map for discriminating against "non-African American" voters.


August will mark 59 years since the Voting Rights Act was passed, and Senate Majority Whip Durbin (D-Ill.) believes that more needs to be done to protect voters.

  • Durbin reintroduced a proposed amendment to enshrine an explicit, individual right to vote in the U.S. Constitution.


Leading up to the 2024 election, former President Donald Trump threatens the state of democracy.

  • A Georgia court will hear Trump's appeal to disqualify Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis (D) from the election subversion case after a trial court allowed her to remain on the case.


Courts heard cases about photo ID requirements for voting today.

  • A federal court in Idaho held a hearing today in a challenge to two state laws that eliminate student IDs as an acceptable form of identification for voting. Activist groups say the laws make it harder for young people to vote.


  • Oral argument was heard today in the Nevada Supreme Court over a ballot measure that would impose photo ID requirements for in-person voting. The court will determine if the measure will be on the ballot this fall.


There have been some recent wins for voters in court.

  • A New York court largely rejected the New York Republican Party's challenge to a law that simplifies the absentee ballot counting process, keeping most of the law in place.
