Big oil companies have been misleading the American people for decades about the threat of climate change. Now, Democrats in Congress are fighting back.
Our newest SEEC member, Congressman Jamie Raskin, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, has released a 65-page report outlining the results of a three-year investigation into the role that oil and gas companies have played in the climate change we are experiencing today.
Jamie Raskin pointed out that these companies could have been the environmental Paul Revere who warned us about the threat of climate change decades ago, but, instead, they were like Rip Van Winkle, wanting everyone to go to sleep.
“The thing that gets me the most is thinking back to the decades when ‘Big Oil and Gas’ understood the problem in a way almost no one in the country or the world did,” he said.
Some of the key findings of the report:
While they’ve publicly attacked journalists who report that Big Oil has known the truth for decades, in internal documents they’ve admitted that the journalists have gotten the story right.
Once they no longer could deny that climate change is happening, they switched tactics to actively spreading disinformation about how “clean” fossil fuels can be.
They’ve made public pledges to cut their emissions while internally admitting they have no plans to achieve these goals.

Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 118th Congress while we continue fighting for a sustainable future.
