I’ve tried not to write too many missives about Trump’s current trial. Mainly because I don’t like to give him the attention he so desperately craves. However, I did want to take a moment to acknowledge what happened yesterday.

The former President, who is running again for the highest office in the land, had to sit in a New York City court and listen to a woman he had an affair with talk about how he broke the law.

If this were 2014 I’d think this was a Hollywood plot! But no, this trial (and the many others that have happened and will happen) are real life. And yet Trump has a shockingly strong chance at winning the presidency again this year.

I’m not going to get into the lurid details or deep into business accounting, but here’s what I’ll say: Donald Trump is an existential threat to our country. He believes he is above the law and therefore, above our democracy.

Trials like this really matter. They prove not only to Trump, but to our country, that our checks and balances work when tested. It’s vital that Trump be treated like every other defendant - no worse, no better. No special treatment.

We also need to start planning ahead. What happens if Trump does win? How do we protect these checks and balances?

I’d argue one of the most important places we can be focusing our time on is winning back the House of Representatives. If Trump wins, the House becomes battleground #1 for fighting back. My race plus a few others, are the key to checking Trump’s power. If we lose my seat, Donald Trump and MAGA extremists will have total control of Congress next year.
