Jack, to be honest with you, I am not inspired by our choices in the upcoming election. However, that doesn't matter. The two candidates, President Biden and Donald Trump, offer two very opposing directions for our country.

One candidate has vowed to "be a dictator on day one" and has already incited an insurrection. The other sees protecting our democracy as “a battle for the soul of the nation.”

Trump is a clear and present threat to our democracy—and has, for nearly a decade, threatened our free press. The Fourth Estate, our news organizations, another pillar of democracy, should be repeating this message over and over in order to protect our democracy. However, the New York Times, the second most circulated news publication in our country, doesn't think that's their role. According to the Times' Executive Editor Joe Kahn, their job is reporting fairly on the race and then letting the chips fall where they may.

This just proves that Democrats cannot rely on traditional news organizations to tell our story. The Republicans have built a strong right-wing media apparatus to communicate with their voters. Democrats need to start to invest in news media.

That's where Daily Kos comes in. Daily Kos is the country's first and only participatory, grassroots-funded, news and activism hub. If Daily Kos were to disappear tomorrow, nothing would take our place because no other organization does the work we do.

The problem is that it's not enough for Daily Kos just to survive. We need to thrive to fulfill our mission of delivering the progressive news, fighting for democracy by giving our audience information, and providing resources to win elections and impact the government.
