John,
A new report from Media Matters found that The Washington Post recently misled its readers with a ridiculous sky-is-falling take on social security.
In the article, The Post repeated Republican talking points about Social Security running out of money and erroneously claimed that funding Social Security was increasingly the national debt.
Perhaps most distressingly, in an election year, they falsely claimed that both President Biden and Donald Trump don’t have a plan for Social Security’s future. This is despite the fact that, later in the article, they mention President Biden’s actual plan to raise taxes on the wealthiest Americans to ensure Social Security’s solvency.
We’ll explain what’s behind this nonsense in a moment, John, but if you’re ready to help us fight against misleading coverage in the mainstream media, can you chip in $15 now? [[link removed]]
So why is The Washington Post , a “paper of record,” publishing misleading and contradictory news?
First, The Post thrives when as many people as possible click on its headlines. Its number one goal is to increase profits and drive traffic—even if that means stretching the truth. Fear-mongering sells, and The Post is pushing a tired right-wing talking point to an audience primed to worry about their retirement and the future of Social Security.
Secondly, this is The Post ’s sad attempt to appeal to “both sides” of the political spectrum. The GOP has long used false claims about social security and deficit scares to terrify seniors and ram through radical changes to the program like privatization.
In reality, Social Security is doing much better under President Biden than Donald Trump. But that’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it line in The Post ’s otherwise deceptive article.
At COURIER, we understand that news coverage is about more than sensationalism and clicks. For too long, an outdated news model has driven the conversation around important issues like Social Security, John.
Getting clicks and engaging in fake both sidesism isn’t working. It’s what got Donald Trump elected.
Here at COURIER, we fearlessly call out the mainstream media when they prioritize profits over journalism. And we’ll never sacrifice our values for a quick buck. We put the communities we serve first, no matter what.
Right now, our reporters in our ten battleground newsrooms work around the clock to provide free, factual news to the communities that need it most. Can you contribute $15 to support our mission? [[link removed]]
