Katie Porter for Congress

This morning, I was in the kitchen on a conference call when my daughter Betsy bounded downstairs and announced that she was hungry. What was for breakfast, mom? Can we have pancakes?

As the first single mom of young kids elected to Congress, a key skill is knowing how to mute the audio and video so I can deal with my three kids’ requests and interruptions. These days, that's part of my job description.

So I helped Betsy get cereal, pouring the milk and taking note that we had a spare gallon. As she beamed at me and crunched her way through the bowl, it hit me. Betsy had said she was hungry. I had to go look in the fridge.

But we are fortunate enough to have food at every meal. Betsy never really goes hungry (she just gets hungry). And I may not have milk in my fridge, but I have money in the bank for milk.

But so many families, through no fault of their own, are struggling to put food on the table. This pandemic is wreaking havoc on millions of working people. So many moms and dads now have to choose between paying for prescription drugs, their rent, or if they can afford to buy food for themselves and their young kids. I can't imagine. And I refuse to stand idly by.

No child or family should go hungry simply because they can't afford food. We have an obligation to take care of each other. Now more than ever. So I'm asking you to donate right now a charity called to No Kid Hungry. This is important.

I know this is a financially trying time for many of you. So if you aren't able to donate right now, I understand. But if you can afford to give even $5 or $10 to No Kid Hungry, it would go a long way. Your donation will pay directly for meals for children who have nothing else to eat. $10 pays for 100 meals. $50 pays for 500 meals. $100 pays for 1,000 meals. Wow. Think about what an impact can you have right now if you click donate. You can prevent so many kids from going hungry.

Please, I'm asking again -- donate anything you can afford. No donation is too small. And if you're able to be generous, now is the time.

We can get through this trying time. But only if we all stick together.

Very truly yours,

-- Katie Porter
