CLASP’s youth economic justice work centers around advocating for policy changes that are rooted in transformative economic liberation and lead to a new youth economic opportunity system while advocating for bold and visionary legislation. We work alongside youth and the Communities Collaborating to Reconnect Youth (CCRY) network to uplift and amplify these economic liberatory visions. Check out our new resources for insight into key issues, strategies, and principles surrounding youth economic justice.
CCRY proposes a new federal Youth and Young Adult Development and Economic Opportunity (YYADEO) system to replace the youth workforce development system currently mandated by the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act. The YYADEO system will be driven by and accountable to young people, provide support through the transitions of adolescence, and invest in long-term economic opportunity that benefits entire communities.
Check out Sapna Mehta, Nia West-Bey, and Kirby Phares’s new report on youth opportunity and employment, ”Voters Favor Policy Investments to Support Young Adults, Including Employment Training and Paid Family and Medical Leave.” They discuss how the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2023 report on poverty revealed that the young adult poverty rate reached 15.3 percent in 2022, the highest level for this age group in five years. With so many young people facing barriers to economic well-being, the alarming figures underscore the need to invest in youth development and opportunity to ensure that young people have the necessary training, employment opportunities, and job protections to support themselves and their families.
