Not a Day Too Soon: Senators to Discuss Dreamers and the Need for a Legislative Solution   

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled to talk about Dreamers today, an overdue opportunity to refocus on a population still living in limbo.  

"The urgency for Congress to act and provide a legislative solution for DACA recipients and other Dreamers has been evident for years," said Jennie Murray, President and CEO of the National Immigration Forum. "Republicans and Democrats must work together to provide permanent protections to this group of individuals who grew up in the U.S. and make great contributions to our communities and economy."  

The majority of American voters support bipartisan work "to pass immigration reforms that address labor shortages and inflation, and protect people already here and contributing." Protecting Dreamers would fall directly into this category.    

Last year, Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) and Dick Durbin (D-Illinois) — both members of the Judiciary Committee — introduced the Dream Act of 2023, a bill that would provide Dreamers with protection from deportation and an opportunity to obtain permanent legal status if they meet certain requirements.
