Dear Reader,
It's Teacher Appreciation Week and The Hechinger Report is halfway through our spring campaign, focused on these vital players in our education system. If you haven’t given yet, I’d like to encourage — and hopefully convince — you to give now.
Contributions from individuals like you make a significant impact on our newsroom’s sustainability. With your support, our reporters can continue to meet with educators across the country, amplify teacher voices and make a positive impact along the way.
Take, for example, reporter Neal Morton’s story about team teaching in Arizona's Mesa Public Schools that is illuminating one solution for the nationwide teaching shortage. Soon after Neal’s story published, the U.S. secretary of education visited the school featured in our story and included team teaching as part of his new direction for the agency.
Since then, that classroom model has expanded from two states to 12; from 10 school systems to 28; from 45 schools to 93; from 123 educator teams to 241; and from an estimated 9,854 students to 20,485 in fall 2023.
We’re incredibly grateful to hear how our stories are useful, insightful and making a real impact in the lives of students and teachers. It inspires us to work harder, pursue more investigations, and better serve our readers.
However, we are a nonprofit newsroom and rely on reader support to continue this work. Even a $5 monthly gift goes a long way.
