Dear John,

Many of my supporters have heard me tell the story of how I ultimately decided to run for Congress. More than anything, our uprising in Ferguson exposed just how deeply our leaders had failed my community.

Running for Congress is not a small task, but it became clear that someone needed to step up. Then, in 2016, I heard Senator Bernie Sanders declare that #BlackLivesMatter, that climate change must be addressed, that our income inequality levels are unacceptable, and that all people deserve healthcare. I can honestly say hearing him speak was the final push I needed to run.

Why? Because I knew that once I got to Congress, I would have an ally and a friend willing to fight for the values we need so desperately in St. Louis.

And I wasn’t the only one. Groups like Brand New Congress and Justice Democrats that support our campaign were founded on some of the very principles Bernie brought to the mainstream: dignity, equality, and justice for all people through visionary policies like Medicare for All and the Green New Deal.

Because of leadership like Senator Sanders’, we are running a 100% people-powered campaign alongside a slate of powerful progressive change makers. Everything that we do, we do for our communities, and for the dream of a better world. It is no small feat. And we are only the beginning -- every cycle, more of us will run for Congress for the chance to represent ourselves.

With the continued spread of COVID-19, we can’t lose sight of all we’ve achieved. Our races aren’t about image, or ego, or the game of politics: they’re about a movement that millions of people can believe in: #NotMeUS.

There will always be hard days, some much more so than others. But there are also days yet to come, that I know will change our future forever, days when we win. We’ve seen the power that just one person can have to inspire millions of others. Every seat matters. Every race matters. And we’ll only go upward from here. Are you with me?
