In just a few days, oil and gas companies will announce yet another year of record profit at their Annual General Meetings.
But they aren't the only ones raking in huge amounts of money.
The utility companies trying to raise our rates and halt climate progress will be announcing huge profits, too — and these companies are owned or paid off by the fossil fuel industry.
But with your help, we won’t let them get away with it.
Utility companies that have monopolies to sell us gas and electricity market themselves as providing energy as a public service. But in fact, they're motivated by one thing: profit.
That’s why utility companies are choosing to spend the hard-earned money we use to pay our energy bills on unreliable, expensive energy sources that will burn down our planet — and fund their political efforts to slow down the transition to renewable energy.1
It’s why they choose to raise our rates to pad their wallets and maximize their profits while turning off our power in seconds if we don’t pay them enough.2 This can have a devastating impact on health and safety, which will only get worse in the face of a worsening climate crisis and more extreme weather.
It’s not fair — and it doesn’t have to be this way. That’s why we’re going BIG this year to take on utility companies and the fossil fuel companies that back them.
Utility companies don’t want to change the status quo. But by exposing utility companies' charades and ramping up public pressure, we can push them to switch our utilities from fossil fuels to renewable energy.
Their Annual General Meetings are the perfect opportunity to do it, John.
