Hey there, do you think public school students deserve a choice?
Hi there,
Do you think education freedom is a threat to public schools?
Governor Cooper seems to.
Last year, our governor had one of his lowest PR moments to-date when he declared a misleading “state of emergency.” And just what was the emergency? The “emergency” was that tens of thousands of North Carolina families were going to become eligible for the Opportunity Scholarship Program, which provides scholarships for families to send their child to the school that best suits their needs.
Think about that. Governor Cooper thinks it’s a five alarm fire when parents receive a choice in their child’s education.
It doesn’t seem that the governor gets that it’s the lack of choice within the public school system that is hurting students.
Not-So-Open Enrollment
And here is the thing: school choice doesn’t just let families choose private schools over public schools. It lets families pick the schools, including public schools, that best suit their family’s needs. School choice also means allowing parents to choose which public school their child attends.
Opponents of school choice, like Governor Cooper, may believe your zip code should define your future. But that’s not fair. It’s not reasonable, and it’s not how we should invest in our kids.
Data from states around the country shows that open enrollment, which empowers parents to choose the right public school for their child, helps. In fact, in some cases, it actually increased rural school populations.
Ultimately, families’ freedom to choose forces public schools to provide what local families need and want.
So when Governor Cooper tells parents school choice is a zero-sum tug of war between private and public schools, he’s wrong.
If there’s any “emergency,” it’s the lack of choice built into the public school system.
