As a former teacher, I deeply believe the old adage, “Those who fail to learn from history are condemned to repeat it.” That’s why it’s important that we foster safe, open, and equitable classrooms where children can learn freely. And it’s why we must ensure teachers are equipped with the resources they need to create those spaces for children.
Unfortunately, both classrooms and libraries have become political targets for the far-right MAGA movement with over 4,000 books threatened with censorship and bans last year.
We shouldn’t be running away from our history or diversity. We should be learning and growing from them. We should instead be focused on addressing the real challenges facing teachers and students: gun violence. Access to broadband. Student debt.
We should empower teachers and librarians to do their jobs to the best of their abilities -- not making it harder for them. John, please join me and sign on your support for teachers and librarians and fostering places where we can all read and learn freely.
