Dear Ward 8 Residents,
I have heard the concerns of residents and have been on the frontline ensuring that residents have what they need. Apart of this effort has been including relief for residents in the COVID-19 Response Supplemental Emergency Amendment Act of 2020. This bill has 150 pages and there is a lot more that the legislation does but here are a few highlights:
- UNEMPLOYMENT: This legislation supports unemployment benefits that allows for the flexibility to incorporate additional benefits from the federal government and the ability to waive some requirements.
- DEBT COLLECTIONS: during the public health emergency and for 60 days after it over, no creditor or debt collector will be able to file new collection lawsuits.
- GRADUATION: This legislation addresses some of the concerns by providing a waiver opportunity for seniors who would have otherwise graduated except for not meeting certain graduation requirements.
- MORTGAGE PAYMENTS: For homeowners, this legislation makes an option to develop a deferment program that grants at least a 90-day deferment period for mortgage payments
- UTILITY DISCONNECTION PROHIBITION: Gas, water and electric companies cannot disconnect services during this public health emergency.
This bill continues to provide supports for our residents, businesses, and people who work and live in the District. We will get through this together.
