MCLA Day at the Capitol

Celebrate, Engage, Connect: Another successful Latine Day at the Capitol

The Minnesota Council on Latino Affairs (MCLA) successfully hosted its annual "Latine Day at the Capitol" this past Friday, a testament to the strong bonds and active participation of our community. The event, which drew about 200 attendees, was a celebration of Latine culture, featuring engaging dialogues, vibrant cultural performances, and a delectable spread of local cuisine.

As usual, the *2024 Latine Day at the Capitol* was driven by the dedicated efforts of MCLA's staff, who collaborated closely with community partners and public officials. Executive Director Rosa Tock welcomed our communities and reminded the significance of 5 de Mayo in México and the traits of endurance, resilience, and fight that we all share. During her remarks, Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan invited members of our communities to make the Capitol a place where they belong and are welcome to engage with their elected officials. Secretary of State Steve Simon reminded the public that legislators are eager to hear from them. In a key electoral year, he highlighted the importance of voting. He said that his office would make sure that automatic registration was done in an orderly way while being excited about the fact that teenagers could now start pre-registering to vote.

Ámada Márquez Simula, Mayor of Columbia Heights, emphasized the importance of civic engagement, representation, and running for office and shared how critical being bilingual is for her. Adriana Cerrillo, Director for the Minneapolis Public Schools Board, shared how proud she feels about her roots, expressing the importance of equity in education and advising the young attendants that it is crucial to know and appreciate our roots and who we are.

Vibrant performances highlighted the day, from cultural Mexica dancers, Danza Group Kalpulli Tlaloctecuhtli, and the soulful voice of "a capella" singer Yunuén Ávila, which resonated deeply within the halls of the Capitol. The event also featured a resource fair with diverse community partners who provided valuable information and services to the community. Attendees also enjoyed the giant "alebrijes" and the art workshops offered by NeoMuralismos de México. Other community members attended a session with Majority in the Middle to learn more about the legislative process, where no question was too silly to ask out loud.

MCLA extends its deepest gratitude to all legislators, public officials, Council members, and community partners for their invaluable support. Their contributions were instrumental in making this event a resounding success. We extend special thanks to our sponsors, the Office of Governor Tim Walz and Lt. Celebra, Participa, Conecta: Otro exitoso Día Latine en el Capitolio

El Consejo de Asuntos Latinos de Minnesota (MCLA) organizó con éxito su "Día Latine en el Capitolio" el pasado viernes, un testimonio de los fuertes lazos y la participación activa de nuestra comunidad. El evento, que atrajo aproximadamente 200 asistentes, fue una celebración de la cultura Latine, con diálogos entretenidos, vibrantes actuaciones culturales y una deliciosa selección de cocina local.

Como es habitual, el *Día Latine en el Capitolio 2024* fue impulsado por los esfuerzos del personal de MCLA, que colaboró estrechamente con socios comunitarios y funcionarios públicos. La directora ejecutiva, Rosa Tock, dio la bienvenida a nuestras comunidades y recordó la importancia del 5 de Mayo en México y los rasgos de resistencia, resiliencia y lucha que todos compartimos. Durante sus palabras, la vicegobernadora, Peggy Flanagan, invitó a los miembros de nuestras comunidades a hacer del Capitolio un lugar donde pertenecen y donde son bienvenidos para interactuar con sus funcionarios electos. El Secretario de Estado, Steve Simon, recordó al público que los legisladores están ansiosos por escucharlos. En un año electoral clave, destacó la importancia de votar. President Biden Honors Two Latinas: Ellen Ochoa and Teresa Romero.

The White House announced that on May 3, President Biden named nineteen recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the Nation's highest civilian honor, presented to individuals who have made exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal, public, or private endeavors. Per the White House announcement, among the recipients, two were Latinas: Ellen Ochoa and Teresa Romero. Ellen Ochoa is the first Hispanic woman in space and the second female Director of NASA's renowned Johnson Space Center. Dr. Ochoa has flown in space four times, logged nearly 1,000 hours in orbit, and continues to inspire young generations of scientists. Teresa Romero is the president of the United Farm Workers and the first Latina to become president of a national union in the United States. She has secured key victories to improve the workers' lives who feed and fuel our nation.

La Casa Blanca anunció que el 3 de mayo, el presidente Biden nombró a diecinueve personas con la Medalla Presidencial de la Libertad. La Medalla Presidencial de la Libertad es el honor civil más alto de la nación, otorgado a individuos que han hecho contribuciones ejemplares a la prosperidad, valores o seguridad de los Estados Unidos, la paz mundial u otros esfuerzos significativos sociales, públicos o privados. Con base en el anuncio de la Casa Blanca, entre los galardonados se encuentran dos latinas: Ellen Ochoa y Teresa Romero. Ellen Ochoa es la primera mujer hispana que ha viajado al espacio y la segunda directora mujer del renombrado Centro Espacial Johnson de la NASA. La Dra. Ochoa ha volado al espacio cuatro veces, acumulando casi 1,000 horas en órbita y continúa inspirando a jóvenes generaciones de científicos. Teresa Romero es la presidenta de los Trabajadores Agrícolas Unidos y la primera latina en convertirse en presidenta de un sindicato nacional en los Estados Unidos. Ha logrado victorias clave para mejorar la vida de los trabajadores que alimentan y propulsan a nuestra nación.

Take and Share the Survey about Statewide Testing Redesign – We Need Your Feedback!

The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) is excited to launch the "Statewide Testing Redesign Survey" [ [link removed] ]. Your voice and the perspectives of your community are important to this effort as new academic standards are adopted in science, reading, and math, along with new assessments. The survey asks about how you receive, interpret, and use statewide assessment results. Your feedback will help MDE ensure the results from the new assessments students take beginning in Spring 2025 are as clear and useful as possible.

*The survey is now open for submissions until May 19. *It should take no longer than 15 minutes and responses will be completely anonymous.

Hunger Free Campus Grants Application is Now Open

Minnesota's Hunger Free Campus grant program aims to combat food insecurity on college campuses. Eligible institutions include all Minnesota public postsecondary institutions, tribal colleges, and private non-profit degree-granting institutions. The 2024 grant application is now open until May 23, 2024, with $2,500,000 allocated for this round. Three types of grants are available: Sustaining Designation Grant (up to $15,000), Pathways to Designation Grant (up to $25,000), and Equipment Grant (up to $25,000). A 50% matching fund is required for Sustaining and Pathways grants. For details, visit the Minnesota Office of Higher Education website or view the Hunger Free Campus Request for Proposals.

Make sure you renew within 4-5 months before the expiration date, as USCIS recommends. The government has created a helpful calendar to remind DACA recipients when they should renew.
