Here are some of the actions we've taken recently

Hello John

It’s called a struggle because it’s hard. But over the past few months, you’ve shown again and again that there’s hope. You’ve brought climate- and nature-wreckers to light and campaigned, with imagination and joy, for a better, cleaner, fairer world.

Here are some of the highlights:

A photo showing people dressed in long bright red costumes with white-painted faces, with their hands outstretched and upturned

We fought for nature. Chris Packham led hundreds of activists – including the incredible Red Rebels – through Bath in a dramatic funeral for nature. We got a lot of media pick up for this action, including the BBC, ITV and the Guardian.

A photo of three people people posing as dead mermaids surrounded by fishing nets. Two of the people are inside a giant can of John West tuna.

We called on Tesco to can their support of unsustainable tuna fishing. Rebels from Ocean Rebellion took a stand in central London against Tesco and John West for their destructive role in tuna overfishing.

Tesco, Morrisons, and Aldi all stock tuna caught using deadly dFADs (drifting Fish Aggregating Devices); a cruel and wasteful fishing method which mimics nature by offering shade to small fish. Some of the tuna caught this way is even labelled as ‘sustainable’ by the Marine Stewardship Council. The net result? Tuna populations are crashing to dangerous levels whilst numerous other innocent marine lives are destroyed.

A photo of people sitting on toilets on a beach reading fake newspapers with headlines about water-polluting companies

We campaigned for clean water. Water companies in England are dumping raw sewage into our rivers and seas at an alarming rate. Last year alone, over 3.6 million hours of sewage discharge were recorded – a shocking 105% increase from the previous year.

The Don't Pay For Dirty Water Campaign calls on us all to stop paying the sewerage part of your water bills. Don’t pay for a service you don’t get.

A photo showing three people dressing black robes standing on a rocky beach in front of a sign that reads Sea Knows No Borders

We fought for a fossil fuel-free North Sea. Activists from the UK, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands took action against new North Sea oil and gas extraction. The governments of these six countries are permitting new fossil extraction infrastructure, harming not only the North Sea ecosystem, but also committing the whole world to dangerous levels of warming.

A photo showing people marching down one side of a country road, with three people at the front holding a banner saying Perenco Out

We battled big oil. 200 barrels of reservoir fluid leaked into Poole Harbour last year, endangering precious wetlands and wildlife. On the anniversary of the spill, XR activists from Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole took bold action against those responsible, Perenco oil company. They canoed to the oil refinery on Furzey Island, while others protested outside the Kimmeridge Oil Field, Europe's largest onshore oil production site.

A photo of a street with the windows of an office on the left covered in black liquid, and in the foreground a yellow sign which is printed with Caution Slippery with the Truth

We rebelled for truth at GB News... The media protects climate criminals, while it labels those fighting for the truth as extremists. Days after the government released a new definition of extremism, XR activists blockaded the offices of the real extremists: GB News and its multi-millionaire owner Paul Marshall – and demanded an end to their torrent of climate lies and disinformation.

A photo showing four people dressed as women attending a glamorous party in the street. One is carrying a large gold fake pork pie and holding a microphone like a reporter

...and we launched the Porky Pies! The Porky Pie Press Awards celebrate the very worst newspaper climate and ecological emergency coverage over the past year. In 2023, 85% of Telegraph opinion pieces were anti-green. The Daily Mail buried a global report by top scientists beneath a story about pensioners arguing over geraniums. It was a vintage year for press lies about the climate. But who won?

Watch Chris Packham reveal all here.

A photo showing a doctor, dressed in blue scrubs, holding a sign saying GMC: By banking with RBS You are financing the climate crisis.

We called out the climate-crisis-funding GMC. Healthcare professionals protested outside the offices of the General Medical Council. The GMC banks with Royal Bank of Scotland who continue to finance the fossil-fuel industry. And they found Dr Sarah Benn, a GP and NHS doctor of more than 30 years, guilty of professional misconduct for … holding up a sign saying ‘Stop New Oil’.

A photo showing people protesting outside the offices of Zurich insurance, holding up placards and in front of a big banner that reads Extinction Rebellion Canterbury

And people power won! Zurich Insurance Group, the world's sixth-biggest fossil fuel insurer, was targeted during the Insure Our Future week of action in March. They’ve announced major new fossil fuel restrictions, excluding the underwriting of new oil and gas extraction and metallurgical coal projects. With Zurich, ALL big European insurers (other than the specialty insurers) on the Lloyd's market have now stopped insuring new oil and gas extraction projects.

This major win shows – once again – the incredible power of collective action.

Keep it up – we’re in it together.

Love and courage,

XR UK
