Drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge would be a disaster for polar bears and other Arctic wildlife.

It would also destroy one of the most treasured landscapes in the world. Yet the House of Representatives passed a bill last week forcing drilling to occur there.

What we saw in Congress last week is part of an ongoing, large-scale attack on the wild.

Even as anti-wolf forces moved forward to take away Endangered Species Act protection from gray wolves across the lower 48, they also rammed through a bill that would desecrate the Arctic landscape.

The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is home to polar bears, caribou herds, wolves and more than 200 species of birds. It's the last place that should be plundered by greedy corporate interests and ruined with oil wells.

The Center for Biological Diversity is already in court fighting the Willow project, which would turn one of the largest, most intact wild places in the world into an oilfield.

And we're doing all we can to save Arctic seals and whales who get caught in massive trawl nets and drown.

The extinction crisis is here, and no business-as-usual approach to the wild will help us.

Every day the Center's team of lawyers, scientists and activists are on guard to protect the wild. Part of our mission is keeping score of what officials and agencies are up to — and then holding them to account.

Rubberstamping massive fossil fuel projects and oil extraction in the Arctic is the last thing we need.

We'll keep fighting to protect polar bears, seals, caribou, migratory birds and other vulnerable species — as well as the natural landscapes and biodiversity that we love so much.

We can't let greed win.
