Indivisibles,

Stop us if you’ve heard this before: Republicans in the House are facing a leadership crisis because extremists want to punish their (also extremist) Speaker of the House for not shutting down the government.

That’s right, Marjorie Taylor Greene met with Speaker Mike Johnson today to hold a motion to vacate over his head for his decision to help (*checks notes*) fund the government, pass warrantless surveillance authority, and advance aid for Ukraine. If you haven’t noticed, most of those are popular with the Republican base, MTG just doesn’t want the government to do…anything?

Republican representatives can’t agree among themselves.
They can’t agree with their base.
They can’t function as a political party or organization.

Why is that? Because they are still being led by an insurrectionist harasser who can’t bring himself to follow the basic rules of the court, much less the whole of American policy and procedure

Donald Trump was found in contempt of court for the 10th time today for violating a gag order on speaking out against potential witnesses, the court, or the DA’s office. This time, the judge made it clear that jail was the next step:

“Mr. Trump, it’s important you understand, the last thing I want to do is put you in jail. You are the former president of the United States and possibly the next president as well. The magnitude of this decision is not lost on me but at the end of the day I have a job to do.”

The dysfunction, the rampant disregard for the rule of law and the regular functioning of our institutions, is no longer an abnormality in the Republican party, it is a core feature. They have embraced the idea that they are above the law and all that matters is their selfish drive for power.

Today, we are officially 6 months out from the November election.

That means we have 6 months to outwork, outplan, and outorganize MAGA to ensure that we have a functional democracy -- not only for the next two years but for the foreseeable future.

Now is the time to get involved. Now is the time to get active. Now is the time that we put in the work to win.

With that, here are your weekly to-dos:

 Your 5 weekly to-dos

  1. Check out our Dobbs Anniversary Weekend of Action resource. The Dobbs decision changed the course of contemporary American politics by making it clear to all of us that MAGA Republicans weren’t just here to make threats, they were going to follow through and rip away our rights. Help us use that anniversary to remind people that there’s a better option. We can fight back MAGA extremism, but it’s going to take everyone getting involved and shining a light on their heinous platform. Get ready for the Majority over MAGA Weekend of Action: June 21-24.
  2. Check and see if Neighbor2Neighbor is available in your area. We have opened pre-registration for Indivisible Action’s version of our highly effective, community conversation program -- Neighbor2Neighbor. If you want to have the biggest impact on voter turnout, this is the most effective way we’ve found to mobilize community members (our numbers prove it). Check and see if Neighbor2Neighbor is available in your area and, if it is, sign up today.
  3. Sign up to defend democracy from Trump with Project 2024: Majority Over MAGA. Our Project 2024 was made in direct opposition to Trump’s dangerous MAGA objectives. This new electoral program will ensure Indivisibles all across the country have the opportunity to make a difference in the highest-priority races this cycle and prevent a MAGA catastrophe from taking place. This will include tactics like phonebanking, postcarding, and direct-to-voter texting along with our groundbreaking community conversation strategy: Neighbor2Neighbor. Sign up to be the first to know when we launch our tools in your area.
  4. Call your senator and demand they protect in vitro fertilization (IVF) access nationwide. The MAGA agenda did not just stop at repealing Roe. They intend to ban contraception, IVF, gender-affirming care, marriage equality, and more. Sen. Tammy Duckworth has introduced the Access to Family Building Act, a bill that would enshrine access to IVF and related services as a federal right, protecting both would-be families and their medical providers. If your senator is a Democrat, call and make sure they are a cosponsor. If your senator is a Republican, tell them to put their money where their mouth is, pass this bill, and actually support families. When you’re finished calling, send your senators an email urging them to protect IVF access.
  5. Email your MoC about cosponsoring H.R. 732 -- the Save Medicare Act. We know the MAGA agenda includes ending Medicare as we know it -- and a big part of their scheme includes handing the reins to private insurers. But we’ve seen what happens when greedy insurance companies are put in charge: Medicare Advantage, the privatized option for Medicare, is rampant with fraud and overspending. If we allow insurance companies unchecked power to run the program, we risk sticking millions of Americans with coverage that promises quality healthcare only to deny coverage for essential care and services. Congress must hold these predatory Medicare Advantage plans accountable, and that starts with blocking the deceptive naming of these private plans.

P.S. We rely on grassroots supporters to help fund the tools Indivisibles use on a daily basis -- including the call pages and LTE tools on your to do list! If you're able, pitch in today to help fund our work and keep this movement going.

Call for a Humanitarian Ceasefire

**Content Warning: Talk about the current humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Jump to the line break if you need to avoid this topic.**

The Israeli military (IDF) ordered thousands of Palestinians to evacuate the Rafah region after they intensified bombardment over the weekend in the early stages of the Rafah offensive they have been threatening for months.

New hope sprang up as news leaked that Hamas had agreed to an Egyptian-Qatari six-week ceasefire proposal, but, as of the time of writing, Israeli officials have yet to agree to the proposal.

It’s important to remember: Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly vowed to invade Rafah with or without a deal. So in a moment when a viable ceasefire deal exists and hostages’ families and protesters across Israel are begging Netanyahu to accept it, he’s undercutting any progress before it can be made, imperiling the lives of the over 1.5 million Palestinians currently sheltering in Rafah.

Instead of joining international calls for peace, Senate Republicans sent a letter to the International Criminal Court, threatening them with “severe sanctions” if they issue international arrest warrants against Netanyahu or his administration following their investigation. And this is not some rogue Republican sect, signers included Mitch McConnell and Ted Cruz -- leaders within the Republican ranks.

In a response given to Zeteo, Sen. Chris Van Hollen (who has been consistently looking for pathways to an enduring peace) said:

“It is fine to express opposition to a possible judicial action, but it is absolutely wrong to interfere in a judicial matter by threatening judicial officers, their family members, and their employees with retribution. This thuggery is something befitting the mafia, not US senators.”

We are at an inflection point. As we shared with you in February, according to Win Without War, “put simply, an all-out offensive on Rafah would be an act of ethnic cleansing.”

Call your representative and tell them as an attack on Rafah begins, the time has never been more urgent for them to call for a ceasefire.

Call your elected officials to demand they advocate for peace.

Truth Brigade

Truth Brigade Big Truths Call Wednesday, May 8 at 6:30pm ET

Register for the Truth Brigade Big Truths Call: Book Bans and Toxic Platforms this Wednesday, May 8 at 6:30pm ET/3:30pm PT. American social media platforms engage in ongoing, unregulated attempts to manipulate kids for profit, which have led to severe mental health problems, disruption in classrooms, and even suicide. Children are also at the center of extremist attempts to limit access to libraries, books, and inclusive public education. On this call, Indivisible Civics will have two special guests to break down the why, the how, and what we can do about it: Dalia Hashad is the strategist and director of the Initiative for Online Safety at ParentsTogether -- the nation’s largest parents’ advocacy group, and Betsy Gomez is a program officer with the American Library Association’s Unite Against Book Bans Campaign (UABB). You don’t want to miss this incredible duo of speakers.

Powering Progress Spring Into Action

Spring Into Action with the Indivisible Civics Powering Progress campaign. The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) has had a big impact on the lives of Americans across the country. The problem: Most Americans don’t even know about it.
