"What is mifepristone?"
"How safe is mife?"
"Is it even effective?"
While we wait for a Supreme Court decision that could cut patients off from this essential health care, here are some quick facts about mifepristone.
Mifepristone is one of two drugs commonly referred to as the "abortion pills." Mifepristone blocks progesterone. Without that hormone, the lining of the uterus breaks down and a pregnancy cannot continue.
Mifepristone is:
-- 91-98% effective in ending an early pregnancy
-- Has been successfully used by millions of people in 20+ years of FDA approval
-- Commonly used for miscarriage management
-- In states where abortion is legal, it is available from a doctor, nurse, health clinic, or Planned Parenthood health center
We've been clear this whole time: Mifepristone is a safe and effective medicine. And keeping mifepristone available is critical to protecting abortion access nationwide.
