The United States is the richest country on Earth. And yet in places like Flint, Michigan and Memphis, Tennessee, millions of Americans are facing the threat of contaminated water - with devastating consequences for our public health.
Although the Flint Water Crisis made headlines in 2014, 10 years later there are still more than 9 million lead pipelines supplying U.S. homes nationwide with their water.
The impact of lead contamination extends far beyond individual households. It disproportionately affects Black and low-income families, perpetuating systemic inequalities and exacerbating health disparities.
Children, in particular, are vulnerable to the irreversible effects of lead exposure, with studies linking it to developmental delays and lasting cognitive damage.
We managed to make a significant dent in this problem by enacting the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which included $15 billion to replace lead pipes across the country. But that was merely a downpayment on addressing the problem. There’s still more to do, and we need a Congress led by environmentally-minded members like those in SEEC to make sure we finish the job.
Let's stand together to build a future where everyone has access to clean, safe drinking water.
