John, like so many Americans, I know from experience that when you’re dealing with a family health emergency, the last thing you need to be worrying about is the insurance bill or how you’re going to pay for it.
You see, when my daughter Lexi was only five, she had her tonsils removed.
I remember the doctor telling us that there was a very, very small chance that she could begin bleeding from where she had them removed in a couple weeks, which can be very serious. I remember thinking “This wasn't gonna happen to our kid.”
Well, it did happen.
That day, I took Lexi to the emergency room and stood there with her while she bled profusely from the mouth. To make matters worse, they told us they didn't have enough medical staff and couldn't help her right away.
We eventually went to our local children's hospital and they took good care of her — and thankfully, she was fine.
We were lucky to have good, quality care that day — and that I had health insurance so that we wouldn’t have to worry about medical bills. But unfortunately, that’s not the reality for millions of families across our country.
We are the richest nation in the world, and health care should be a right — not a privilege.
I’m running for the U.S. Senate to fight for Medicare for All so that every family can seek the care they need when they need it. No one should have to compromise between the health of their family and making ends meet.
