My health care journey began unexpectedly as a child during a swimming lesson, where an emergency led to the discovery of my undiagnosed heart condition, supraventricular tachycardia.

This early encounter not only helped me manage my condition but also instilled a deep respect for health care workers, inspiring me to pursue a career in nursing.

As we celebrate National Nurses Week, I want to highlight the dedication and sacrifices of nurses, whose hard work and commitment are key reasons I embarked on this journey.

Since my diagnosis, the label "pre-existing condition" has followed me throughout my life, marking my medical records and ultimately motivating me to run for Congress.

At a young age, I was determined to ensure that everyone, especially those from working families, could access the same level of care that was crucial for me. After college, I worked as a registered nurse, dedicated to implementing the Affordable Care Act (ACA), opening up access to high-quality health care for millions.

But in 2017, everything changed. The Republican majority in the House was poised to repeal the ACA, so I went to the only town hall held by our congressman that year. He promised to protect those with pre-existing conditions like me. Yet, just two weeks later, he voted for a repeal bill that would make health care less accessible and more expensive for millions.

I was really upset and then it clicked. I said, ‘That’s it. I’m running’ and launched my campaign. And that’s what happened. I got mad and I was not going to let it go. I told myself, ‘You have to have the courage to step up and lead.’

With this incredible team behind me, we won, and I became the youngest Black woman ever elected to Congress. In Washington, I've kept my promise, proudly passing 14 pieces of legislation, including laws that:

prescription
drugs.

Save
families
an
average
of
$2,400
per
year
on
health
care
coverage.
*
Improve
maternal
health
care
and
expand
health
care
for
veterans.
*
Support
pregnant
moms
in
the
workplace.

I am so proud to be a nurse in Congress where I advocate for health care reform that helps patients, working families, and those who need it most.
