I want to take a moment to share why Powered by People is spending so much of our time, energy, and resources on helping Texans register to vote.
First, Texas makes it harder to register to vote than any other state.
That might have something to do with the fact that we’re the most diverse swing state in the country. The Texas GOP knows that if more young Texans and people of color were able to register, their days in power would be over.
With no online, automatic, or same-day voter registration, the onus is on volunteers like ours to knock on doors, hold voter registration drives across the state, and help Texans navigate the bureaucracy and red tape when registering to vote.
Second, Democrats have a significant voter registration deficit to overcome if we want to win big, important elections.
Coming out of the 2022 elections, Texas had 7.9 million registered, likely Republicans and 7.5 million registered, likely Democrats — a deficit of nearly half a million registered voters.
While we may be able to overcome this voter registration deficit in close local and state house races, it will remain difficult to win statewide elections — for governor, U.S. Senate, President, and more — until we register more Democrats to vote.
In other words, even the most aggressive turnout efforts will continue to fall short until we have more registered voters to turn out.
I hope you’ll consider making a contribution of $10 or whatever you can today to help us register the millions of eligible but unregistered Democrats in Texas.
Getting this done is going to take years of work, but I know we’ll get there with the support of people like you.
