Saludos John, it’s Gabe. New Mexicans will never forget the impact of the testing of the first nuclear bomb right here in New Mexico. Last week, I asked Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin if he supports expanding compensation to New Mexico downwinders. He said yes — and I fully agree.

That’s why I’m extremely disappointed in Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson.

He stripped the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act out of the National Defense Authorization Act — willfully ignoring the many Americans who deserve compensation for radiation exposure and have been waiting for justice from the federal government for decades.

John, I’ll never stop fighting for New Mexico’s downwinders and their families. If you’re with me, sign my petition and DEMAND that downwinders receive the compensation they deserve → [[link removed]]

Throughout my time in Congress, I have repeatedly urged House Republicans to include the expansion of the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act in the NDAA and co-sponsored the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act Amendments. This week, I was even joined by a bipartisan group of members of Congress [[link removed]] to call on Johnson to bring this legislation forward.

The benefits offered by the original RECA program failed to include New Mexican uranium miners and those who were affected by the nuclear bomb test at the Trinity site.

With the program scheduled to end this year, now is the time to make substantial reforms and make RECA the law of the land — but Yvette Herrell’s biggest ally, Speaker Mike Johnson, would rather leave downwinders behind and deprive them of the compensation they’re owed.

That’s UNACCEPTABLE, John. I decided to run for Congress because I was sick and tired of seeing the people of New Mexico repeatedly being left behind by extremists who only care about advancing their own political agendas, and this is a prime example of that.

I want you to know that I'm all in on this fight, and I won’t stop working for New Mexico's downwinders to get the compensation they've been owed for far too long. Add your name to my petition NOW to demand compensation for New Mexico’s downwinders: [[link removed]]

SIGN THE PETITION [[link removed]]

Gracias,
Gabe
