Notes from Mike's Desk

Hello, friends! Thank you for subscribing to my newsletter highlighting what’s

happening on Capitol Hill and in Louisiana’s 4th Congressional District. I’m always grateful when you recommend this resource to others.

IN THE HOUSE

Recently, I went to Columbia University - the epicenter of antisemitic campus protests - to meet with Jewish students and demand that the university bring an immediate end to the chaos. The virus of antisemitism is spreading nationally, and Congress has a responsibility to act to protect Jewish students and free expression.

That's why last week I announced a House-wide effort to crack down on antisemitism on college campuses. As part of the effort, the House will be looking into federal funding universities receive, the foreign student visa program that has allowed students sympathetic to terrorist groups to attend our schools, and the generous tax benefits universities enjoy. The federal government plays a critical role in higher education, and we will use all the tools available to us to address this scourge. Watch our press conference announcing this new initiative here.

Two weeks ago, the House worked its will and passed critical aid to our besieged allies in Israel, Taiwan, and Ukraine. Right now, the world is destabilized. It is a dangerous time. Three of our primary adversaries, Russia, Iran, and China are working together, and they're being aggressors around the globe; they are a global threat to our prosperity and our security. Their advance threatens the free world, and it demands American leadership.

Make no mistake, this legislation was not a blank check like the Senate-passed supplemental legislation. The House made important improvements to the package, including assurances that aid will not end up in the hands of Hamas, converting economic aid to Ukraine as a loan, the REPO Act (which allows the U.S. to use seized Russian assets to fund Ukraine's defense), legislation to force the sale of TikTok from CCP-backed ByteDance, and other critical sanctions on Russia, China, and Iran.

After the vote, I spoke with the press to answer many of the pressing questions, and I hope you will take a moment to listen below. If you would like to read more about the legislation, a fact sheet can be found here

On April 16, the House transmitted to the Senate articles of impeachment against Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for his refusal to comply with federal immigration laws, fueling the worst border catastrophe in American history. Abdicating their constitutional responsibility, Senate Majority Leader Schumer voted to dismiss the articles and refused to hold a trial.

By voting unanimously to bypass their constitutional responsibility, every single Senate Democrat has issued their full endorsement of the Biden Administration’s dangerous open border policies. Secretary Mayorkas alongside President Biden has used nearly every tool at his disposal to engineer the greatest humanitarian and national security catastrophe at our borders in American history.

Alongside Committee on House Administration's Subcommittee on Oversight Chairman Barry Loudermilk, House Republicans released thousands of additional hours of CCTV footage from January 6th. Since I announced my intent to release the full 40,000 hours of footage to the American public, we have released 20,000+ hours and will continue to release the remaining footage online, delivering truth to the American people and ensuring it does not expose sensitive security information.

IN THE MEDIA

I have sat for a number of television and radio interviews to discuss our work in the House recently. Please see below for a collection of those conversations. Click the images to watch.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

It was my privilege to host a roundtable and spend the morning honoring Shreveport firefighters and first responders.

As the son of a first responder critically injured in the line of duty, I know firsthand the sacrifice these heroes make to protect our communities and we thank them for their faithful service.

Over the past few weeks, my staff in Louisiana has held numerous satellite office hours and grant listening sessions to ensure that Louisianians and our local governments' needs are best being met by the federal government. Our staff can assist any resident of Louisiana’s 4th district with federal agency programs, such as Social Security, Medicare, and military veterans’ issues, and are also available to help constituents obtain the status of pending cases and provide passport information.

If we can ever assist you with any of these matters, please do not hesitate to give our office a call at 318-840-0309.

LAGNIAPPE

Since I was elected by my colleagues to serve as Speaker in October, national media outlets have made countless trips to northwest Louisiana. I’m grateful that they’re shining a light on our area, and recently CNN visited Shreveport/Bossier to speak with my constituents. Watch that clip here:
