Nearly every state and Washington DC has proposed active gun safety legislation this year—and many of the ones that haven’t just aren’t in session. It’s incredible to witness legislators in communities that span the political spectrum unite over a common goal: ending gun violence.

Our team works in statehouses across the country, collaborating with legislators on new bills and fighting to get lifesaving laws passed. Just one example is Maine, where we recently celebrated a number of significant legislative victories, including expanding background checks and implementing a new waiting period to buy a gun. In a state with a long, complex relationship with gun ownership and hunting, these are major wins that will protect people across the state.

Of course, much of this action was in response to the horrific mass shooting in Lewiston last October. It shouldn’t take yet another group of innocent people to be mowed down by gunfire for lawmakers to do the right thing.
