As-Salaam-u-alaikum (May peace be with you),
We're back with our sixth (!) #MuslimAnd Week of Action - a campaign of the Muslim Youth Leadership Council at Advocates for Youth. The #MuslimAnd campaign first launched as a way to expand common perceptions of Muslims in the aftermath of the Trump Administration's infamous Muslim ban. Instead of saying “I am Muslim, but…”, young Muslims are claiming an intersectional space and saying that we are #MuslimAnd Queer, #MuslimAnd Feminist, #MuslimAnd 5th Generation American, #MuslimAnd so much more.
You can sign up to join here, and we also encourage you to forward this email to young Muslims you know to get as many to participate as possible.
Today, as police are called on student protesters, and state surveillance of our communities continues to hurt our access to healthcare, social services, and overall well-being, the need for this campaign remains strong. Since the continuation of crisis in Gaza — the latest iteration of which has resulted in the death of at least 1,700 Israelis and 34,000 Palestineans as of this writing — attacks and discrimination against Muslims in the United States have skyrocketed once again. Islamophobic and anti-Semitic tropes and genocidal rhetoric have come back in full force while institutionalized forms of Islamophobia in schools, universities, states and national legislatures have grown. It is more important than ever we push back on discriminatory stereotypes and instead tell our own stories in our own voices to counter harmful narratives.
Specifically, during the week of action participants will be calling for an end to Nazaar, or evil eye, as we imagine and create communities of care that don't involve a harmful state surveillance system. Join us as we:
- Ask Congress to defund harmful surveillance programs
- Share tips on surveillance self-defense
- Talk about self-managed abortion as Muslims
- Share our #MuslimAnd stories
The #MuslimAnd Week of Action runs from May 20th-24th Each day, we will share information and resources. We hope that you engage with #MuslimAnd, and work to bring vital change into your community during our Week of Action and beyond.Sign up today!
With peace,
